Doubtful Sound (October 23, 2004)
So, I decided to splurge, and spend the cash on an overnight boat trip into the less popular and more remote classic Fiordland sound (as oppossed to the world famous Milford Sound). During the boat ride across the lake to the road that goes over the pass to the Sound, the weather was great. Once on the road to the pass, the cloud level dropped and the rain started, and I was thinking I was going to have a classic rainy fiordlands trip. That was the case for awhile, and provided for some fine waterfalls. But then, as you'll see, the clouds broke, and I was treated to Doubtful Sound in all of its blue sky splendor. The crew on the boat said it was one of the finest weather trips they had experienced this season - once again New Zealand had treated me well. It was a short trip, just under 24 hours. But it was a very impactful trip, and I glowed from it for the next few days. Grand. Soon I will go to Milford Sound too, but with lots less angst about seeing it above the 500 foot level.
