Sweating it in the Central Kalahari (January 9-14, 2005)
Day one: drove from Joberg to Botswana, and slept in a raging thunder storm in the northern South African desert.
Day Two: During the night at our second camp, we had a big lion roar ten different times within 50 yards of our camp between 1:30 and 4:30 in the morning - We dubbed him Reverend Simba. He along with the two Giant Eagle Owls that made "pig-like grunting noises' as described by the bird book) for a half hour before sunrise (we dubbed them the Decons)and the numerous Red Billed Franklins (a type of ground bird that spends the nights in trees, and "warned" us of Reverand Simba's presense all night long - we dubbed them the Franklin Choir) made for a sleepless but VERY memorable night.
Day Three: Saw lots of wildlife, including ten lions, of which two were "mating." (see Mr. and Mrs. in the pictures).
Day Four: Had an elephant charge us in the car - very hairy.
In addition to those high points, the trip has been great. The central Kalahari was VERY VERY VERY hot. Now we are heading into northcentral Botswana, to enter very eastern Namibia in a few days. All is well.
