Below is a summary of my wilderness adventures by category (backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, canoeing/rafting, ski touring and sailing), followed by a list of the more notable adventures/expeditions I've personally taken (not as part of a guided tour on which I was a paid guest).
➢ Six week backpacking hike of the northern 400 miles of the Appalachian Trail, through the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
➢ Two-to-fourteen day backpacking trips in the Glacier, Grand Teton, North Cascades, Sequoia, Yellowstone, and Yosemite National Parks, as well as countless wilderness areas in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming (totally approximately seven months).
➢ One-to-seven day mountaineering trips in California, Colorado, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming (totally approximately two months).
➢ One-to-seven day rock climbing trips in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming (totally approximately six months).
➢ One-to-fourteen day white water rafting, flat water canoeing/kayaking, or sea kayaking trips in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon and Utah (totally approximately three months).
➢ One-to-seven day ski touring trips in California, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon and Wyoming (totally approximately three months).
➢ One-to-seven day sailing trips in California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island (totally approximately two months).
Notable Multi-Day Adventures
➢ October, 1994 – Seven day canoe trip down the Green River in Canyonlands National Park, in southern Utah.
➢ November, 2002 - Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tansania, a six day trek ascending the lesser traversed and more difficult Western Breach Route.
➢ September, 2003 – Ten day rafting trip on the Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers in western British Columbia and Alaska, with a party of twelve people.
➢ October, 2004 -- Hiked the Abel Tasman Track, a 37 mile backpack along the northern end ofNew Zealand's South Island.
➢ November, 2004 -- A two night backpack of the famous Milford Track, in New Zealand's Fiordlands National Park.
➢ January, 2005 – A three week tour of national parks and surrounding wilderness areas in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, including the Central Kalahari, Zambezi River, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Moremi Game Reserve, Etosha National Park, and Damaraland.
➢ March, 2006 – A three day, two-person sea kayak trip along Isla Espíritu Santo, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
➢ December 2006 – A four day, solo backpack on the Dientes de Navarino Trek, on Isla Navarino (along the Beagle Channel coast, within the Tierra del Fuego archipelago). This is the world´s southernmost backpacking circuit.
➢ July 2010 -- Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Four Pass Loop (southwestern Colorado): a 27-mile backpacking circuit around the spectacular Maroon Bells Mountains, which includes four 12,000-foot passes. Typically done in four days, I did it in 36 hours (over two nights).
